WP Plugin: User Self Delete
By: Jason Craig on Apr 11, 2010 | 23 Comments
Today we are releasing our third WordPress plugin, ‘User Self Delete’. We saw a request on the WordPress Ideas forum and thought we would give it a shot.
As you can probably guess from the name of the plugin, this will allow your users to delete their own account without any need for interaction on the administrator’s behalf.
When a user wishes to delete their account, they are taken to a confirmation page where they must enter the word “yes” in order for the deletion to take place. Once they type “yes” and press the delete account button, they are redirected to the login page and they no longer exist as a user on your site.
Although this may not be the most popular plugin in the WordPress world, we’re sure some people out there may find it useful.

Great plugin, however, you placed the php file and images in a subdirectory (wp-content/plugins/user_self_delete/user_self_delete/) which WordPress doesn’t like. To get it to work I had to delete the subdirectory and move the /images directory and the user_self_delete.php file to the wp-content/plugins/user_self_delete/ directory.

This is a fantastic idea – I was only thinking yesterday about how best to manage registrations and this looks like it could be the answer!
But… I am hiding the admin panel from my subscribers and using Customise Your Community to theme the login, registration and profile pages. Is there a way of showing this delete link some otherway (e.g. template tag)?
Many thanks
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
Thank you for the positive feedback. Unfortunately it is only designed to show in the admin side (wp-admin) where the user can access their profile.
Thanks,
Jason

Actually, that wasn’t our fault. That was WordPress.org when it was uploaded. It doubled the folders on us.

Greate plugin Jason but I have the same problem like Nathan with hiding the admin panel. Your plugin will be mach more popular if you do something with this issue.
Thanks

Hi Lucas,
Where would you like to display a link for the users outside of the wp-admin?
Thanks,
Jason

I think if you put field for “user self delete” inside the profile page, under change password fields, it will be great. Then, if I use Customise Your Community my subscribers have mose important think on one page. They can edit profile, change password and…delete profile (if they want;). I think this is good solution.
Thanks for quick answer your my question:)

Hi Lucas,
I briefly looked at how complex it would be to add it as you’re suggesting and I don’t think we’ll be making that change anytime soon. Especially for the amount of time it would take to rework it and that it is a free plugin.
We just have too much paid work currently. If someone wishes a custom version of the plugin we can probably do that for a fee.
We might make some changes later, but we have no time-frame for it as of now.
Thanks,
Jason

Dismaying. Uploaded activated and set user-self-delete. Then I created a test account and went through the delete process three times. The account is still there and I can still get into it. So I deactivated the plugin. I am using login-configurator. Is there some conflict with it possibly?

Plugin works fine and no one else has reported an issue with it so there could be a conflict with another plugin.

Hello Jason,
I completely agree with Lucas about adapting your plug-in so a user could delete his/her account from the Profile page. I have a classroom-style membership blog and need to hide the Admin pages from users, so having the option to self-delete on the Profile is the only way it will work for me. I also am teaching many other folks how to set up this classroom-style membership blog and would love to recommend you to them, but they’ll all require the same solution.
I’ve spent a lot of time looking for a plug-in that would have the functionality that yours does and yours is the only one available. I hope you’ll re-evaluate whether you could make the changes. When four out of the four people who wrote to you need that functionality, and there are no other options, it looks like you’ve hit the motherlode.
Thank you,
kimberly

Hi Kimberly,
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.
With the amount of paid client work we have going on as well as the amount of time it would take to recode the plugin to work with the profile page, we’re not chomping at the bit to make any changes.
However, if someone would like to hire us to create a custom version of our plugin for them we can do that. Or perhaps we can release a paid ‘pro’ version with such options as you are suggesting and more in the near future.
Thanks,
Jason

I can only second the previous comments. This plugin would be a godsend for me if only the delete button was within the profile itself. I’m using the very awesome Theme My Profile plugin to create a fully editable profile page on the fly for site subscribers on the site of a small radio station in Europe. It means the subscribers don’t go near the admin section of the site, and get a fully customised experience. They don’t even know it’s wordpress. The only thing missing is the ability for them to delete their profile if they choose, and that would be the icing on the cake. I await any future developments with great interest!

FYI to all that subscribed. We started work on v1.5 of this plugin which will allow you to have the plugin be used in the user profile area as requested.
