At BlueLayerMedia we have worked with countless hosts and for the most part, generally they are easy to work with. However, every once in a blue moon we’ll come across an extraordinary difficult host (GoDaddy for example) that deserves special mention.
We were hired by a NFP (Not For Profit) group who was using WordPress as their CMS (Content Management System). They were already familiar with WordPress but wanted to add a custom post type and a custom page template along with some other minor changes. As their site was already live, it wouldn’t have been good practice to start doing development work and possible generating errors that visitors would be able to see.
Our plan was to download their files, obtain a copy of their database, make the appropriate changes to the database and wp-config.php file and have an exact clone of their site on our development server to work with. Sounds simple in both thought and practice right?
The biggest hang up in this whole process was the hosting company, which is called MyHosting.com. Most hosting companies will offer their customers Cpanel to manage their websites. It helps the end user manage every aspect of their website from files, to stats to databases. We also offer Cpanel to all of our customers at BlueLayerHost (yes, shameless plug).
MyHosting.com decided probably back when they originally started to offer their customers some unique and utterly confusing web panel. Our client initially had difficulties in getting the info we needed, so we tried ourselves and found it just as confusing. We had initial problems with not being able to connect to PHPMyAdmin in order to access the database and obtain an export of it.
The real fun began when we tried to get access to the files we needed. After a couple attempts at accessing them with an FTP client and getting 550 (no permission) errors, we tried their File Manager. Of course they had to be viewable there right!? Wrong! The directory we were after wasn’t listed. Off to tech support we went. The first response from the inept “tech” was to click around 6-7 times in their admin panel and change the permissions on the directory. That may have worked if the directory was actually listed, but it was not. A response from us went and the next response we received was to install FileZilla and follow all these other instructions to do the SAME thing as before, just with an FTP client. Obviously a canned response or the tech didn’t bother to actually look in to our issue.
Another response from us and the tech finally figured out the issue. Our client had used a one-click install script to install WordPress. Because of this and for “our protection” access to those files was not allowed. Utterly ridiculous. We finally pasted file path we located in the admin panel and put it in our FTP and got access to the directory we were after anyway. I have to wonder though, how anyone on this hosting would ever go about modifying any of their WordPress files if they should choose or upload anything to their WordPress installation outside of the WordPress upload function.

Did you guys selected wrong plan? I have a VPS with them with WordPress and all that stuff installed. No permissions issue. I use my File Manager in Virtuozzo Power Panel to upload files. And All is great.

Hi Matt,
If you read the post, you would have seen it wasn’t our hosting, but a client of ours. She was on shared hosting which is probably the issue with them.
Thanks,
Jason
