FreeWP Launches!

With so many projects taking place behind closed doors at BlueLayerMedia, we thought we would set some time aside and give you a little insight in to some of our projects.

The first one we wanted to talk about was FreeWP.  This particular project started its life as a PSD.  The PSD was coded to table-less HTML/CSS and then the fun really started to begin.

The main site was coded in PHP utilizing CodeIgniter as a framework. A custom CMS was created allowing for the site’s administrators to have control over themes, emails, companies and much more.

WordPress was used to render blog functionality.  However, WordPress and CodeIgniter don’t work together without a little trick.  You can see our post about how to make the two play well together here.  Once we had the two systems working together we could then pull in content to be displayed in a sidebar on the main site, but have that content created from within WordPress itself.

The process of using FreeWP is as such.  You pick a theme on the site you like.  Once you have your theme selected you can get the theme for “free” by selecting a hosting package.  The WordPress theme you chose will now be automatically setup for you on the host you selected.  From there you will get an email with your login information for your new WordPress website, on your new host with your theme displaying.

In order to make this all happen, hosting companies had to create an API which we integrated in to the site itself so sales could be tracked.

More and more themes are being added to FreeWP as well as hosting companies.  There are a lot more changes slated for FreeWP in the near future, so stay tuned for updates on the project!
